Carpenter, William A., The Exemplar (Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, 1985) A primer of Freemasonry for Pennsylvania Masons, written by a Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. Churton, Tobias, The Magus of Freemasonry (Inner Traditions, Rochester, VT, 2006) The mysterious life of Elias Ashmole - Scientist, Alchemist, and Founder of the Royal Society. Harwood, Jeremy, The Secret History of Freemasonry (Lorenz Books, London) An account of the rituals, signs and symbols associated with the beliefs and history of Freemasonry. Hodapp, Christopher, Freemasonry for Dummies* (Wiley Publishing, Hoboken, NJ, 2005) A 32nd Degree, Knight Templar, and Past Master, Hodapp gives a fine, basic, introduction to The Craft. Jeffers, H. Paul, Freemasons, Inside the World's Oldest Secret Society (Citadel Press, NY, 2005) Jeffers delves into Masonic history to reveal the surprising and controversial truths behind the ancient order, from its mystery-shrouded origins in medieval Europe through its rise in America. Kipling, Rudyard, The Man Who Would Be King and Other Stories* (Oxford Univ. Press, 1996) The featured tale, "The Man Who Would Be King," chronicles the adventures of two vagabond Freemason veterans who attempt to establish a kingdom among Afghan tribesmen, based upon Masonic tradition and principles. It is a classic of high adventure, and a searching parable of Empire. Knight, Christopher, and Lomas, Robert, The Hiram Key* (Fair Winds Press, Gloucester, MA, 2005) A controversial search for the origins of Freemasonry in the beginnings of Christianity. Written by two Freemasons. Lomas, Robert, Turning the Hiram Key* (Fairwinds Press, Gloucester, MA, 2005) Lomas has tackled the big questions about The Brotherhood. What is the purpose of Freemasonry? What do Masons gain from the working of its rituals? What can be gained from the spiritual teachings of "The Craft"? Lomas describes his own journey through the mysteries of Freemasonry. Highly recommended. MacIntyre, Ben, The Man Who Would Be King (Farrar, Straus, Giroux, NY, 2005) The true story of Josiah Harlan, a Pennsylvania Quaker and the first American to enter Afghanistan. The true life story behind Kipling's famous tale, The Man Who Would Be King. Millar, Angel, Freemasonry, A History* (Thuder Bay Press, San Diego, CA, 2005) A comprehensive account of the history of Freemasonry and its spread from Europe to the New World. Illustrated with over 150 photographs, this book documents the rituals, symbolism, and people involved in Freemasonry. Robinson, John J., A Pilgrim's Path* (M. Evans & Co., NY, 1993) Robinson relates the history of attacks against Freemasonry and the motives behind those attacks. In doing so, he discusses the origins of Freemasonry, its tenets, and its goals. He then takes on the anti-Masonic voices who seek to destroy the Craft. Robinson, John A., Born in Blood* (M. Evans & Co., NY, 1989) "If there is only one book you read concerning the beginnings of Freemasonry, I would highly recommend this one.
